I have written before that success = hard work + luck, and that greater success = a lot more hard work + way more luck. But many things go into making any endeavor successful, and because very few business and life paths overlap, this might look a lot like a lottery for those who don't "make it". That may be very true.
So where is the silver lining between each and every success. I wrote last year that there was none, besides luck, the pundits and talking heads who "made it" only have advice after the fact. I changed my mind after remembering this now famous and much talked about TED talk from Angela Lee Duckworth. Her book about grit can be found here.
There is something that has to be said to the power of passion and perseverance. Grit. Stick-to-it-ness. Persistence. It's about the people who stay the course and continue to learn and invest their time and smarts in making their entrepreneurial adventure successful - that is the correct model for success.
It's really a refinement of the "hard work" portion of my equation above. Starting something is just the beginning, but the ability to persevere and be resilient "against all odds" is the only common thread I can see ... you can be creative, collaborative and have excellent adaptability but if you have a tendency to quit easily your adventure will go nowhere. So my equation should now read: success = hard work + courage and resolve + luck Now here's the important thing: persistence and determination can be learned and developed. So it made me think about my own personal experience with competitor sports earlier in my life, then later with well being and mindfullness through fitness and nutrition. I'll talk about it in a future post. So here we are: Courage and resolve will always be essential for success. Believe in the importance of persistence and determination in everything you do, will lead you to success, whatever your definition of success is.
